About Long-Term Care Hospitals
LTCHs are Medicare-certified hospitals that treat patients with serious medical conditions requiring extended hospital-level care. The average length of stay is at least 25 days. Common reasons for LTCH admission include prolonged ventilator weaning, complex wound care, traumatic brain injury recovery, and multi-system organ failure recovery.
When you call: Ask about respiratory-therapy intensity, intensivist coverage, wound-care specialty, and discharge planning to the next level of care.
Ventilator weaning success rate. If your loved one is on a vent, this is the single most important LTCH metric.
Intensivist coverage. Is a critical-care physician on site 24/7?
Average length of stay. Shorter does not always mean better; for complex patients, premature transfer leads to bouncebacks.
